Rockwell Automation announced the launch of a cloud-native, elastic Manufacturing Execution System (MES) on December 9, 2025. The new MES is designed to unify operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) data streams, enhancing resilience, scalability, and real-time visibility in manufacturing operations. The Milwaukee-based company reports that the system simplifies manufacturing processes and accelerates value delivery. The elastic MES uses a cloud-native, interoperable architecture to connect OT and IT environments through modular components, supporting improved scalability and resilience.

Background

Manufacturers frequently encounter difficulties integrating siloed MES systems with OT and IT, restricting operational visibility and agility. Rockwell's 2025 State of Smart Manufacturing Report identifies integration challenges as the top internal obstacle for 21% of surveyed manufacturing leaders. The elastic MES addresses these issues by offering a unified platform for managing materials, inventory, production, and tooling. It includes embedded analytics and connected worker technologies.

Rising demand for industrial systems that blend edge resilience with cloud scalability informs current MES development. Modern MES solutions must enable autonomous operations, maintain traceability, and offer low-latency performance. The ISA-95 standard and OPC UA interoperability model are key frameworks supporting these requirements.
